Well we are. We’re fabulously majestic creatures with more creative surges than an electric fence and more fight than the karate kid. Although in the past few years we have been making waves in design and marketing there is still so few of us out there. I’ve spoken to several brilliant woman in our industry and some say that after university the women that had qualified from their course had moved into other sectors or in actual fact never pursued a career in design as they felt intimated by the largely male environment.
While this might be the case, you can’t change anything from the outside. You need to get your hands on the inner workings and wriggle yourself in. Girls united and the idea of girl power are strong attributes. This isn’t a time for elbows and back stabbing it’s a time for lending a hand to another soul sister or giving her a leg up the wall.
Ever felt like it’s all impossible? Haven’t we all. I’m not going to pretend we can, in the words of Jessy J, “Do it like a dude, do it like a brother” but we can most certainly do it our way, with just as strong characteristics. I’m soft and still cry on bad days and still want to slump into bed after a mistake – this doesn’t make me weak. It makes me human. I can carry 7 shopping bags and still manage to open me my front door without putting them down, does this make me more manly? I don’t think so. I won’t hide anything that makes me, me. So why should you?
Don’t be put off by the male environment, embrace it and bring another sister with you. Be the change you want to see in Advertising, Design and Marketing. Don’t be apologetic. Don’t be frightened to be who you are. Why are woman brilliant? We all are.
